I was born in Tokyo, raised in Hokkaido, grew up in Singapore, and a permanent resident of Australia. I’ve spent 1/3 of my life equally in each of these countries, thus making me a Japorearalian. I often refer to this kind of person as someone without a real place to call home, except for this big blue round place we call earth.
I worked as (in chronological order) – a breakdance instructor, a dish washer, a hotel clerk, a club promotor, a club organiser, an event organiser, a movie extra, a stuntman, an actor, a model, a marketing assistant, a sales rep, a demand management rep, and most recently (or as I write this paragraph) a channel partner manager at Google Australia.
2014 is (or was) the year when I’ll be making the boldest decision of my life, to quit the posh job at Google, sell or give away every single possession that I own, pack my life into a single backpack and leave to pursue the next big adventure.
Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
As I embark on my journey, I plan to take one step at a time, walking each step a little slower than usual with bigger depth and breadth. I believe that if I take more care and put more meanings to the simplest things in life, and work to discover my inner soul by helping others find theirs, I will come out a better man.
At this point you must be wondering what it is that I’m going to do. To be honest, I don’t actually know, apart from the fact that I’ll be travelling for the next 12+ months or so, throughout South East Asia, Nepal, Egypt, Europe, South America and Canada, volunteering wherever I can at farms, schools, homes, or small family owned businesses.
I really hope so, because I haven’t set any particular dates to end my journey. However there’s one thing I look to return home with (yes, I don’t intend to be homeless), which is to have a fresh new perspective on what ‘home’ is, where every little earthlings that I help, or every little farm animals that I look after, or every new species of plant that I seed during my next 12+ months of volunteering, should give me a hint of who I really am as a person, how I can make a difference to the world, and what I should do for my next adventure.
